Everybody Hates Spending ("EHS," "we," "our") is a financial entertainment product. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights over it. We've written it to be readable, not just lawyerly.
Information you enter directly:
By default, all of the above is stored exclusively on your device using your browser's localStorage. We do not transmit it unless you explicitly enable Cloud Sync (see Section 3).

If you create an account or sign in to enable cloud sync, your purchase history and profile are stored in Google Firebase Firestore under your unique account ID. This is an opt-in feature — the app functions fully without it.
When Cloud Sync is active, Firebase (Google) processes your data subject to Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy. We do not sell this data or share it with third parties beyond Firebase's infrastructure role.
EHS may optionally use Google Gemini to enhance roast text. When this feature is active, a short prompt containing your purchase details (merchant name, amount, category) and the base roast text is sent to the Gemini API. No account information, receipt photos, or personally identifiable information beyond the purchase itself is included in this prompt.
AI-enhanced roasts are only active when a Gemini API key is configured. In the default public build at everybodyhs.com, roasts are generated entirely on-device using our rules-based library.
Google Gemini's data usage is governed by Google's API Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
EHS is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has submitted information through the app, contact us at the address below and we will delete it promptly.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your data. For data stored on your device, you have full control — use the "Reset App Data" option in Settings at any time. For cloud-synced data, you can delete your account and all associated data from Settings.
Residents of California (CCPA) and the European Economic Area (GDPR) may contact us to exercise additional rights. We will respond within 30 days.
Local data persists until you clear it via Settings or clear your browser storage. Cloud-synced data is retained until you delete your account. Server logs maintained by Vercel are subject to their own retention policy.
We may update this policy as the product evolves. When we make material changes, we'll update the "Effective date" at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
